When someone works at home and is gearing up for a big move, the home office is probably the most important room in the house and therefore, needs the most attention when packing up. This is not just another room with clothes, toys, a linen closet or kitchen utensils. It is the source of income for the household and must be packed with extra care. Not only is it where the household’s livelihood is created, but it is probably also used to pay bills, monitor household needs, pay checks, store receipts and bank statements and everything else important you need documented and easy access to before, during and after the move.workspace-in-bedroom-0-500x460

First and foremost, like any other packing job, make sure there are sufficient packing supplies. Better to have too many than too little. Because the home office has heavy items like books and printers and items that need care like scanners and computer screens, ensure there is a lot of packing paper, foam and bubble wrap. Extra sturdy boxes and tape are encouraged.

Start packing early. The second it is know that a move is in the future, direct your attention to the office. This is a good time to start going through all documents and shredding anything outdated or not needed, especially if they can be accessed online. If not, this may be a good time to whip out the scanner, put all documents onto a hard drive or computer and getting rid of the paper. Not only is going paperless healthy for the environment and easy for you to access all in one place, it also saves time packing and makes packing a lot easier. Lots of paper weighs more than online casino anticipated and this could save time and money on excess boxes, organizing papers and packing in correct order.

Once packing has started early on in the moving process, remember to pack what is least needed for your business first. Books that won’t need to be referenced for a few months, picture frames of family, and old documents should be packed up right away. Anything like the laptop, scanner printer and phone line should not be packed until the day or two before the move. They should be easily accessible so it is still possible to work during the packing and before actual moving day.

If the office has many desk drawers it is wise to pack them as they are. Don’t empty drawer into boxes if they are organized, this just wastes time and space. Place drawers as is in a box and place bubble wrap and/or packing paper on top to secure the contents. With one drawer at the bottom of each large box you can then fill with smaller, lighter items. Putting more than one drawer in a box adds unnecessary weight.

If there is a unit of drawers the is light enough to lift, use an nondestructive tape to secure drawers shut and either place in a large box or as is in the moving truck or van. This however, does not apply to filing cabinets and storage cupboards or cabinets in general. Those are much heavier with doors and drawers that are prone to swinging open during a move. These should be emptied and contents packed into clearly labeled boxes. Instead of labeling “CABINET” be specific. Write “ CABINET/2ND SHELF/2001-2010 TAX FILES” This takes a couple seconds longer but saves a lot more time later when unpacking and should be applied to every box that is packed up.

traditional-If the office contains a large library, pack books smartly. Filling an entire box with books will end up being really heavy, hard to lift and the box has more potential to break. Books should be dispersed throughout boxes on the bottom and packed with lighter objects on top. Make sure these lighter components are not harmful to books like inky pens or sharp envelope openers.  Some books get ruined when packed upright and other when laid down flat, so pay attention at which books are being packed.

Regarding all electronics in the home office, it is ideal to pack those in their original boxes. Scanner, photocopiers, printers and computers all come in perfect size boxes with foam padding. If the boxes have been kept but not the foam, pack with bubble wrap so electronics will not be bumped around. If movers are helping, they can supply packing materials for these large type electronics, but they won’t be an exact fit and this may result in damage.  Fill with unbreakable objects to secure packaging. This kills two birds with one stone- securely padding your larger belongings and having space for smaller objects to be packed.

Last but not least, notify all your clients about the change of address. Do this by phone, or if there are too many people to call, explain to them via email. Update business cards if necessary and good luck unpacking in a brand new home office.
